Are You Ready To Start Spring Cleaning?

It is officially springtime! No matter what the weather is like, since the days are getting a little longer and the sun is shining more (hopefully), your mind might be heading towards the idea of spring cleaning. After all, there is something so satisfying about starting this portion of the year with a neat and tidy – and clean – home.

Yet because spring cleaning is a much bigger job than the usual weekly or bi-weekly household clean, it’s important to prepare before embarking on the task. If you’re not ready and just jump in, you might find it’s a bit much to handle.

Which means you might give up part way through. This leaves your home in disarray. To prevent this from happening, read on to find out how to get ready for spring cleaning.

Have A Clear-Out

During the winter, clutter builds everywhere. Whether it’s a pile of toys that kept the kids entertained on gloomy, rainy days or corridors full of all the family’s jackets and boots, you need to be able to see every part of your home before you can clean it, and all that ‘stuff’ is just making the job a lot harder.

Organizing while decluttering speeds up the process. You could tackle one area at a time or one category of things before moving on to the next. Regardless of your strategy, try not to attack the whole home at once. Taking it one room at a time keeps you from being overwhelmed and quitting, meaning you can start the spring clean in a positive frame of mind.

You can safely discard damaged or worn goods, but consider self-storage services for other things you know you won’t need again until next winter. You can hire drive up storage units, add some shelves or drawers, and turn your rental unit into a virtual home extension, freeing up a lot of space and keeping everything safe.

Wash Everything

Something else that will help you get ready for spring cleaning – and can even be a part of the spring clean if you plan things out correctly – is washing everything. When we say everything, we mean everything. That includes carpets, cushion covers, bedding, curtains, bath mats, rugs, and anything else you can pick up and put in the washing machine. Of course, it’s wise to check the label first. Not everything can be washed in this way and may need to be hand washed or taken to an expert.

We’re not just talking about fabric items of furniture and décor either. What about properly cleaning your makeup brushes or the inside of your washing machine? How about your washing-up instruments? What can you clean? No matter what it is, do it.

Check The Fridge And Freezer

If you’re like most people, you’ll keep filling your fridge and freezer up when you buy groceries, but you won’t often throw things out. That’s why there’s so much stuff in these appliances. Take some time to check them and get rid of anything that’s no good. That means anything that has been open for a long time, anything past its use-by date, and anything that you can’t recognize!

Perhaps you already do this with the fridge, but when was the last time you emptied your freezer? It could be that you have years’ worth of stuff in there. If you throw out what you don’t need, it will be easier to clean. In addition, it will be cheaper to run as it won’t be working so hard.
