With the new year approaching, now is the best time to begin put your health first, summer will quickly be on the horizon! After all, your health is your wealth.
It’s simply never too early to think about your health throughout the year. In order to make sure you stay on top of self-care this season, implement a few of these tips. These tips might even help you have the best summer ever.
Drink more than you think.
Hydration is key all year round. However, it’s even more important during the warmer months. The sun is beating down and you naturally perspire more. To replenish the body’s water supply, drink at least half of your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 160 pounds, drink at least 80 ounces of water each day. To add flavor, throw in a few lemon slices. Any type of citrus fruit will do well. Alternatively, cucumber slices or mint leaves will infuse a different type of flavor as well. It’s also great to eat your water by consuming water-rich foods like honeydew melon and cantaloupe.
Get lots of rest and relaxation.
During the summer months, it’s easy for a workaholic to stay indoors and work long hours. However, you don’t want to work your life away. Take time to relax and enjoy the weather. This is also a great method to help you get rid of stress. After work, go out on the patio and read a book. Go for an early afternoon swim and get to bed a little earlier for a full night’s rest. Your body will feel recharged and energized.
Protect your skin.
Though it’s great to get outside and enjoy the weather, it’s also essential to wear sunscreen. The UV rays from the sun can be really damaging if you don’t utilize any protection. In this case, wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your skin from the potential damage.
Eat lots of healthy meals.
Make sure each plate has tons of color on it. Green, leafy vegetables, colorful bell peppers and corn are a few of the great vegetables to include on your plate. In The Big Fat Surprise, author Nina Teicholz talks about the benefits of adding meat, cheese, eggs and other forms of dairy to your plate. Add a scrambled egg at breakfast. Throw in some feta cheese in your salad at lunch. Add a small piece of steak with your veggies at dinner time. Just make sure that you use the right portions. Start eating with small plates to keep your portion sizes down.
Indulge in daily physical activities.
If you eat every day, you should move every day. Do your best to complete at least one fun exercise every day. Get your heart rate up with spinning, swimming or cardio dance classes. Get toned by lifting heavy weights. Get limber by practicing yoga and pilates. As you do these exercises, you’ll have tons of fun and be more likely to maintain a healthy weight.
