The Hundred Foot Journey is certainly my top movie pick of the year for so many reasons and naturally, for the food! |
The food aspect of The Hundred Foot Journey is certainly an aspect of the film that attracts me. (This tidbit surely comes as no surprise to long-time Rural Mom readers!) I find the class of classic cuisine cultures that fuse together in delightful new ways highly appealing, both in the global food dishes the film inspires and the story line it parallels.
In US theaters August 8, The Hundred Foot Journey is based on the best-selling novel by Richard C. Morris. Starring Helen Mirren, the film follows the life of Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal,) who is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch.
Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin-starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) gets wind of it.
