I’ve always treasured my book collection and have been able to share many of my childhood favorites with my children. In our modern world full of rich resources, it doesn’t seem possible that there are children who do not have access to books outside of their classrooms. No favorite, tattered, dog-eared favorite to treasure and share with others.
Studies reveal that two-thirds of children living in poverty do not have any books in their home. Thanks programs like Disney Junior’s Give A Book, Get A Book Program, though, the books are flying off the press and into the hands of these children in need.
Earlier this month, I attended the Disney Social Media Moms event at Disneyland, a special conference hosted by Disney, and joyfully watched the unveiling of the new program. Coinciding with the program announcement , lifelong children’s literacy advocate LeVar Burton, Cofounder and Curator-in-Chief of the award-winning Reading Rainbow app, spoke about the importance of building literacy and of storytelling in the digital age. Disney Junior stars Ariel Winter and Tim Gunn (of “Sofia the First”) and David Arquette (of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”) also participated in a storybook reading for event attendees and their families.
Disney and First Book are committed to provide for the donation of up to one million books to U.S. communities in need and will present families with free digital books from Disney Publishing Worldwide!
There are two ways to Give a Book, Get a Book in Disney Store locations and later this summer at other nationwide retailers,. For a limited time, with the purchase of any specially-marked Disney Junior book or product, receipts or packaging will include a redemption code allowing kids and families to direct the donation of a book to First Book in the region of their choice and to access a free Disney Digital Book to share as a family.
Additionally, Give a Book, Get a Book bookmarks with redemption codes will be distributed to visitors at participating public libraries and Radio Disney events throughout the summer. During the event I attended, I received a bookmark and immediately proceeded to redeem it to gift a book to a child in need.
The process is super simple. You got to GiveaBookGetaBook.com, enter your special code, select a book and a region to gift to and – viola! Donation made!
Families can also take advantage of an all-new website, GiveaBookGetaBook.com, featuring tools and resources for parents and caregivers that promote the value of storytelling and offer interactive activities.

That’s really nice to donate books to children. Children love to read and it is so good for their development, so this is an awesome idea.
I love any program or initiative that donates books to children and promotes literacy. This will open so many doors for so many kids.
I love this campaign and that moment when LeVar Burton read to us, I was a little girl again.
