Keeping Our Pre-Teen Connected with Walmart Family Mobile Unlimited Plans

It’s certainly time to address the cell phone issue with our pre-teen! As part of a sponsored post for the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community, I’m adding an extra line to our Walmart Family Mobile plan.

Waiting to get picked up from a basketball practice that was cancelled or has ended early is certainly not fun, but it’s even worse when you have no means to communicate and let someone know you need a ride now, not later.  Being without the best wireless plan to meet your immediate needs can make things unpleasant for everyone.

Like many moms, I was anti-getting a cell phone for our children. Without a cheap wireless plan option available to us through our former high-price service, I couldn’t justify the cost, but as we discussed on Rural Mom last month- middle school happened! No longer could we ignore our growing son’s needs for a cell phone to help us stay connected.

Thankfully, we’d already discovered the Walmart Family Mobile plan when we began using the service to keep my husband connected during his work commute.  We’re already saving a bundle and adding an extra line was now reasonable and feasible.

For only $35 a month (pre-tax,) we’re able to add an extra line with unlimited text, talk and internet for our son.  With that low cost, we have no qualms about adding the extra line.

We purchased a great starter phone, the Concord, which has a full range of features, but a nice low price point (ARV $79.88.)  I had thought about waiting until his birthday to surprise him with the phone, but decided the need was too great and that we’d gift it to him the next time I picked him up from basketball practice.

He was a bit curious about the gift, but hesitant that we were probably being silly with a practical joke or something (our family has been know to have a lot of silly fun!)  His reactions were priceless as he discovered what was inside the gift bag:

He actually screamed “I have a cell phone!” but when I told him about how we could afford the cell phone, we agreed that the utterance should be “Walmart Family Mobile rocks!” because, well, it does!

Now with our monthly savings, we will have the freedom to add a line for our youngest son when the time comes…

… just not yet.

Despite the pleas and bargaining tactics our clever little guy comes up with, he knows he still has a few more years to go.  But he also knows that when the time comes, we’ll easily be able to and will readily add him via our online account management and information tools. As we have the lowest price rate plan available, we certainly have the financial wiggle-room to do so!

It’s a relief to now have our son better connected to our family.  He can now stay in constant communication regarding his practice schedule, extra curricular activities, school projects and every other important facet of his daily schedule.  As a parent, I have better piece-of-mind and no major dents in my pocket-book.  A true win-win solution!

Your son looks so happy! My ten year old keeps begging, but I’m just not ready quite yet. That is a great bargain though. Nice find!

Words can’t express how cute the photos are. Love it.

Yes, I agree, although kids get phones younger and younger, I think it’s sorta’ necessary. I’m just about ready to get my daughter a phone – love the idea of the family mobile.

I’ve heard some great things about the Walmart family call plans that they offer. My ten year old is asking for a phone and this just might be the perfect option for him when that time finally comes.
