Living in the country means limited access to the best wireless service. Living at the base of the Appalachian Mountains means sporadic service, at best. Yet, still we pay $125 (pre-tax) for 700 minutes call time, unlimited text, and 2 GB of internet even though we can’t use one stitch of that service at our home.
Why then? Well, for the same reason many country folk purchase cell phone plans- we often drive to town to run errands, to tote the kids back and forth from activities, and for all the occasions we are on the road and traveling. Having a cell phone is a smart tool to have when on-the-go.
Our family relies on our cell phone, perhaps, a little more than most as my husband commutes to another state for work. His cell phone is a lifeline to our home, keeping him in touch with us, allowing us to share all the day-to-day happenings by phone and the ability to send him pictures and texts through the internet. It’s not the same as being here, of course, but it really helps keep our family connected. And though, you never plan for it, it certainly is vital for him to have the cell phone in the case of an emergency.
Until recently, I thought I’d be stuck with our contract phone service paying exorbitant costs, but I found out there’s a better way and of all places, I found it at Walmart! (see highlights of my shopping experience here: https://plus.google.com/110626780416241914200/posts/ib8eELMxd56 #FamilyMobileSaves)
The Walmart Family Mobile plan powered by T-Mobile offers a no-contract, monthly pay plan with unlimited talk, text, and internet for… get this… only $40 (pre-tax) per month.
When I heard about this cheap wireless plan, I knew instantly that this would make a terrific Father’s Day gift for my husband. We are nearly due for contract renewal on our current plan, his phone is outdated, and the potential savings would be a big benefit to our family.
My dad always said, “work smarter, not harder.” Having a cell phone plan that saves us money, offers more service, and still get the job done in a superior way, seems like it ought to fulfill that notion!
The criteria I have, the Walmart Family Mobile plan fits very well:
- Smartphone options are available including the Samsung Galaxy S III, Apple iPhone 4 and 4S, and the phone we’ll be gifting, the T-Mobile MyTouch
- Extensive coverage areas include Lexington and Atlanta, the two area my husband commutes to and from. Service in our area should be available, too, but we are already aware of and deal with those limitations with our current plan
- Affordable is an understatement with this plan, the $40 a month rate is amazing!
- Dependable service looks promising, but is yet to be determined. From the little testing I’ve done so far, I’m very impressed already.
- Flexible plan. Don’t you hate being locked into something and then your needs change? Me too! With the Walmart Family Mobile plan I’m not going to have to worry about that as it’s a month-to-month, cancel anytime plan. This will also be great to have in place when the kids go off on their own.
Activating the service was a breeze. You follow the simple instructions from the Walmart Family Mobile Starter Kit and insert the SIM card enclosed, set up user name and information on the online account management and information page (you will need internet connection for this step,) turn on the phone and away you go.

Looking forward to seeing how your hubby likes the surprise. 🙂
Might be sooner than we think… the boys are really excited and keep asking me to “test” it some more when he’s not home. lol
What a great Father’s Day gift!! I love the idea of such low cost service. Look forward to your next post 🙂
I’ve been hearing good things about the Walmart plan. The only thing is that where we live Verizon works best.
I have never considered a no contract plan, but you make it sound like I should definitely check it out.
It really is comparable, so far. I think the contract plans need to begin changing their game soon to keep up!
These are some great cellular no contract plans. I’m tired of paying so much for my cellular phone bill!
This is a great no contract cellular plan. I, for one, am tired of spending so much money on my cellular calling plan.
We have this plan as well and LOVING it.. I hope it will be as big with your family as it is with ours and start saving some money… Can’t wait to hear about the surprise and what Dad had to say… Thanks for sharing…
Sounds like you found a fantastic deal, especially without having to sacrifice any features! My parents relocated to a rural area but both frequently travel. Having dependable service while on the road and for emergencies is so important and they love to be able to share what they are up to and photos with the rest of the family. I’m loving the low price and especially the price break for adding additional lines! With both kids on phones now, my family would save a ton by switching! Thanks so much for sharing about your find – I’m looking forward to reading more about your experience 🙂
So cool to find a better deal – and stay in better touch with your family! Thanks for sharing!
