As a homeowner, one of the biggest issues that you’ll need to handle is going to be pests. Problems with pests can quickly grow out of control overtime and eventually mean that you struggle to love your home and enjoy spending time there. If you are worried about this, then it’s important to understand some of the key steps that you can take to manage common household pests. Let’s look at a few of these in turn so that you can make the right decisions.
Pigeons
First, you might have a common household pest like pigeons. These can end up living on your roof or even inside your attic and if that’s the case, then you need to make sure that you spot the signs of a bird living in your home. For instance, you could find bird droppings around your attic. What’s the best way to deal with this? Ideally, you need to make sure that you are bird proofing your home as much as you can. This does tend to mean filling in the gaps that might exist in your roof. That can be an issue due to damage from a particularly bad storm.
Mice
Next, you could find that you have issues with mice in your home. Again, the most common sign of this is going to be the droppings that they leave around your home. However, you might also find that there’s holes in your food boxes. There are definitely humane ways to deal with an issue like this and it’s the best option if you want to make sure that you get rid of the issue without disrupting an animal.
Carpet Beetles
Another pest that you might have to handle is carpet beetles. There’s good news about carpet beetles and that’s the fact that they don’t do much. Despite the name, they don’t even eat your carpet that much and it’s estimated that 90% of homes have at least some carpet beetles. If you are worried about this, then there are lots of sprays and cleaners that you can buy from most household stores. That means that you can always get the treatment that your home will need.
Termites
Finally, termites are one of the worst pests. This isn’t because they bite but rather due to the massive level of damage that they can cause to your property. Indeed, it’s estimated that termites will cause millions in property damage each and every year. If you are worried about this, then we recommend that you do think about how to spot the signs of an issue with termites. One of the most common signs is a termite mound that has connected itself to your property from the outside. Once this happens, they could potentially disrupt the structural foundation of your home and that will lead to huge costs further down the road. If you don’t catch the issue early, then it could lead to your home being rendered virtually worthless by the time you sell.
