Things Every Healthy Home Should Have

Want your home to be as healthy as can be? Who doesn’t? Everyone wants a healthy home!

To achieve this, there are a few things you want to ensure you have in your space. Use our top six things every healthy home should have as your starting point for creating a healthier environment for your family today.

Plants

If you don’t have any houseplants in your home, it’s time to change that right now.

Why? Because not only are plants incredibly beautiful but they are also able to reduce the number of pollutants, including carbon dioxide and airborne dust, in the air. If you have allergies or asthma, this can be really helpful. Even if you don’t, having a few plants around will help you to breathe far more easily.

First aid kit

It’s not at all surprising that most accidents happen in the home because your home is the place where you and your family spend the most time. That is why it’s so important that you have a fully stocked first aid kit in the bathroom at all times.

This kit should include basics like bandages and antiseptic spray. It’s also useful to have a list of healthcare professionals like the local urgent care center and the number of your family physician, just in case the worst happens. This way, the family will know exactly who to call.

Things Every Healthy Home Should Have

An organic mattress

Next time you need to change your mattress, make sure that you opt for an organic one. Why? Because many mattresses are coated with toxic chemicals that have been linked to various illnesses including breathing problems and even cancer.

Although the risk is thought to be quite low, if you can afford an organic mattress, it will help you to avoid various toxins in a place where you spend at least 8 hours out of every 24.

Bright decor

If you love neutrals, you don’t have to suddenly paint all of your walls bright yellow or invest in a shocking pink couch, but there is no denying that color has a big impact on our mental health. Adding a pop of yellow (good for boosting mood) or blue (aids relxation) can influence your moods positively.

Find colors that make you smile. Look for colors that help you have a sense of calm. Place items throughout your home to reflect these moods where you need them most. Painting and wallpapering in these colors are also great ideas, but you don’t have to committ fully to a color in a room. Items like pillows, vases, and table clothes can be changed out seasonally as your needs change.

Slippers

Every member of your family needs their own pair of slippers. Leave them in a in a basket by the front door for easy access.

Why? Because studies have shown that wearing shoes indoors is bad for your health. This is not surprising because shoes pick up all kinds of bacteria including mold, lead, and pesticides. You then transport this onto carpets and furniture. We breathe them in and our kids touch them and put their hands in their mouths when playing! Yikk!

Cast iron cookware

Having a cast iron skillet is a really good idea because many non-stick pans contain nasty chemicals. (This is what enables them to be non-stick). A cast iron skillet is much safer and will last far longer. Our family passes down cast iron skillets. This has been going on for generations and they are all still in excellent shape.

If you have all of these very healthy items in your home, you will live, breathe and sleep much easier!
