Handmade gifts are hands-down my absolute favorite gifts to give and receive. This year, I wanted to celebrate our love of all-things Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter by making personalized ornaments for my family.
I wanted something quick, simple and stylish. After all, it’s a busy season and I truly don’t have time for elaborate crafts. I also wanted to find something suitable for kids to join in on making, should mine be interested in creating for their friends or other family members.
Figuring if I stuck to easy-to-duplicate symbols or words from the films, I could easily craft something instantly identified as a Fantastic Beast or Harry Potter ornament. Some of the symbols, like The Deathly Hallows, I already knew well. To get ideas for others, I simply googled “Fantastic Beast symbols” and “Harry Potter symbols.” Easy-peasy!
Once I knew what symbols I thought I could easily duplicate free-hand, I decided to use standard ball ornaments, a bit of nail polish, and paint pens (like Sharpie oil-based paint markers.) I’m really pleased with the results and hope this crafts inspires you to add a little Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter DIY to your holidays!

Directions:
Use paint pen to draw symbols of choice onto surface of round bulb ornament. Allow to dry.
Use paint pen to embellish the back of the ornament with the recipients name and/or the date.
TIP: For a hands-free way of drying the ornaments, I used a small cardboard box that I cut a bunch of small slits in where the top of the ornament could easily fit. After painting, I simply turned the ornament upside down and fitted the top loop into the slits in the box. You could also hang up some string in a laundry line fashion and clip the ornaments to it as they are drying.
Optional: Prior to using paint pen to draw symbol on ornament bulb, use nail polish to pain streaks of color on round bulb ornament. Allow to dry. This technique adds interest to the ornament and creates a matte effect on shier surfaces of round ornaments so the that symbols stand out more when painted.
Then, use paint pen to draw symbols of choice onto surface of round bulb ornament. Allow to dry.
Use paint pen to embellish the back of the ornament with the recipients name and/or the date.
As my oldest son is quite the Marvel universe fan, we snuck in a cool symbol ornament for him, too:
PS: Always keep in mind that hand-crafted ornaments can be flammable. Do not place them next to or on top of Christmas tree lights.

My MIL loves Harry Potter!! I might have to make one of these for her. 🙂
Those turned out cute and why not personalise your tree with your favorite things? Plus each year you can add more and have a tree filled with memories and things that give you joy.
Super cute! This would be fun for my family because we are restarting our ornament collection.
I love the vibrant colors and the images on the ornaments. Only true fans would understand what they really mean!
