I am rarely rendered speechless by a film, but the words to describe QUEEN OF KATWE are hesitant today… daring to spill out, but deeply concerned they will not do this magnificent triumph of cinematic excellence true justice.
QUEEN OF KATWE is based on the vibrant true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda who is introduced to the game of chess by Robert Katende, a former missionary and soccer coach, and goes on to become an international chess champion. If you love under-dog-rise-up-to-glory sport films, you’ll love this one, but it’s so much more than just the tale of an athlete rising up. It transcends far past the cliches we’ve come to expect in the traditional sports film.
You will be transported to the world of Phiona Mutesi, one that is filled with the raw grit of street life and makes no apologies for its honest portrayal. QUEEN OF KATWE immerses us into the journey of a young mind corrupted by an oppressive world as she struggles to embrace her talent and change the seemingly indelible plan than life has prescribed for her and her family.
This film is not merely about a girl who triumphs at chess matches (though, that’s pretty cool in and of itself,) it is the epitome of hope in the darkness and the triumph of the soul.
I dare say QUEEN OF KATWE is my favorite film of the year. I’ve seen plenty of movies, nearly all of the new releases this year and even some wonderful Indie films, many of which deserve top billing, but this film has left me with the irresistible urge to advise everyone I know to see it, to share the experience with all those closest to me, and to never forget the many inspirational and important messages this mesmerizing movie conveys. This film reminds us that our lives are all intertwined and we all have the power to help lift each other up.
After watching QUEEN OF KATWE the first time, it changed me, as truly soul-searching and moving movies often do. I left the theater drained from the emotional ride but full of light and inspiration and the very essence of HOPE. I cannot think of a person who would not enjoy this film and not be filled with gratitude that they had the good grace and fortune to enjoy it.
There are words that are not hesitant and that I believe truly do this film justice – Go see QUEEN OF KATWE. Now. Today. You will be thankful you did.
