On the trail of the Southern Barbecue belt, Alabama shines with a complex and diverse plateful of options. Ranging from pecan smoked to specialty white-sauce soaked, you can sample barbecue throughout the entire state and have a new mouth-watering experience at every stop.

Though I’ve only been to Alabama once, it’s high on my list of locations I’m itching to travel back to, not only for the amazing range of delicious BBQ options but also for the sun-soaked beaches and history-rich trails. No matter what road you travel in this eclectic state, there is a welcoming experience awaiting!
When you think of beaches, Alabama probably isn’t the first place you think of, but it really should be top of mind- they are like the best kept secret in the south! Mile after mile of luxurious sand draw in locals and smart tourists with their celebration of sun, seafood and relaxation. Adventure seekers will find parasailing and tons of other exciting water activities, nature lovers will enjoy the bird watching and dolphin spotting opportunities found along the coast. You simply can’t go wrong with a fun family day at the beach and Alabama offers plenty of them.

After you have filled your days with fun in the sun and filled your bellies with amazing culinary delights, you’ll also want to take time to explore all the back roads in Alabama. Off-the-beaten paths, you will find a wealth of history, culture and even some amazing science-rich stops like one our favorites, the Alabama U.S. Space & Rocket Center. My hubby has fond memories of visiting during his childhood and it’s a location we hope to take our sons to soon. Attractions like this are so wonderful as they not only entertain, they educate, helping to keep young (and old) minds sharp during all the rest and relaxation of vacation.
Also top of our list for activities is the Alabama Civil Rights Trail. There’s even an app (http://alabama.travel/civil-rights-app) to help you find civil landmarks throughout the state and plan your trips to cities that were pivotal locations in the civil rights movement. I think following this trail would be an amazing experience for our entire family and a journey that everyone would benefit from taking.

What excites you the most about visiting Alabama? Would you head for the barbecue, beaches or back roads first?

I live on a back road, but would love to be in a place that had a back road AND a beach! I hope to someday travel the country. I’ll have to put Alabama on my list. In the fall though. All the southern states are in the fall haha.
