Homegrown Honey Bees

A peek inside Homegrown Honey Bees: Beekeeping Your First Year

With natural bee colonies on the decline, the world is continuing to see a plethora of pollination problems.  Crops like strawberries, apples, soybeans and even cantaloupes are dependent upon our buzz-worthy friends to thrive.  If you’ve ever considered starting a backyard bee colony, now is a prime time.  You’ll be helping the environment and reaping some pretty sweet rewards!

Thinking about getting started beekeeping is a more than a bit overwhelming.  It’s one thing to care for a coop of chickens, quite another to be responsible for thousands of insects that happen to sting. The good news is, it’s not as bad as you think it will be and the double good news is there are excellent resources available like Homegrown Honey Bees: An Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Beekeeping Your First Year, from Hiving to Honey Harvest.

Chock full of colorful illustrations and step-by-step advice, Homegrown Honey Bees is and excellent resource guide and a highly interesting read, too.  How-to advice is geared towards encouraging beginners to move forward confidently with their new beekeeping hobby.

From the research that takes place before acquiring the first hive to establishing a healthy colony, each step is covered in full detail.  Readers are guided through the entire process including equipment selection, safety gear, feeding, hiving, smokers, replacing the queen, and the amount of time and money required.

I found Homegrown Honey Bees to be an entertaining read, as well, and certainly have a new found respect for our important pollinators.

It’s the perfect book to fulfill your curiosity or to use for educational instruction in addition to being a must-have guide for beekeepers.

That’s certainly a barrier! I always pick up some at the farmer’s market, but think it will be so different to have it straight from the hive to home. Someday…
