Redemption In The Paws of Man’s Best Friend, Duke

Hallmark Movie Channel originals never fail to delight and leave me with a heart-warming, fuzzy feeling of hope and inspiration. The enchanting and heartful drama,“Duke,” is certainly no exception.

Steven Weber (Wings/Leaving Las Vegas) stars as marine sergeant, Terry Pulaski, who returns home after fighting in Iraq.  As many combat veterans experience, Pulaski is unable to cope with reentry into civilian life as he is plagued with overwhelming personal, mental and physical challenges.
Pulaski winds up homeless with only his his loyal friend, Duke, a dog with plenty of personality and gumption who sticks with his wounded soldier through the turmoils of street living.  But when Duke falls ill, Terry must make difficult choices that will either have drastic consequences or may lead him down the path of redemption and reconciliation.

I found “Duke” to be tear-jerker (be sure to have the Kleenex nearby) with a lot of heart and some very unexpected, refreshing moments of laughter.  The movie handles some very sensitive issues splendidly and sheds real light on the difficult transitions many of our military heroes face upon return to the U.S.
The relationship between man and “man’s best friend” is made highly credulous by brilliant acting from both lead protagonist and his furry friend.  Sometimes I don’t think we give our pets enough credit, they certainly doe rescue us from many things, even if just the simple stressors of the day with their welcome grins and unconditional love.
Suitable for family movie night and great for gift-giving, “Duke” is available March 12 on DVD
