Are You Ready for the Great American Backyard Campout?

I’m blessed to have the great outdoors as my backyard.  Our farm property, nestled at the base of the Appalachias, is surrounded by farm property and backs up to a national forest.  Since we moved here, I’ve always said that I feel like I’m on a perpetual camping trip (and that’s quite a good feeling!)

But, despite our natural surroundings, and though we going hiking regularly, I’ve given very little thought about making a camp spot in the back field.  I guess it’s just too dang easy to enjoy the creature comforts of your home!

So, I’m glad to see the National Wildlife Federation encourage a family night of exploration under the stars with the Great American Backyard Campout.  I’m already inspired to think of clever activities and fun foods to entice my children (not that it will take much coaxing, I’m sure they’ll be up for a night of fun!)

This year’s Great American Backyard Campout is being held on June 23.  Families are encouraged to camp out in the backyard, a park, campground or even on their balcony (provided it’s a safe/secure spot.) If you can’t find a spot, maybe you could plan some nighttime outdoor activities and then make make-shift tents in the family room to join in the event.

In addition to planning your family backyard camping experience, if you register on http://www.nwf.org/Get-Outside/Great-American-Backyard-Campout, you’ll have the opportunity to raise money for programs that help connect kids to the great outdoors and be eligible for Great American Backyard Campout t-shirts, gift cards, and more.

Coleman recently announced their partnership with the National Wildlife Federation to become a national sponsor of Great American Backyard Campout.  (Which certainly seems like a natural fit.) They’re offering a special sweepstakes with a mega-grand prize of ten thousand dollars and camping gear – you can find out more about that here: https://www.facebook.com/colemanusa

Do you plan to join in on the Great American Backyard Campout on June 23?  What ideas do you have for some fun family activities for your campout?  Do you have any favorite campfire foods?  I’d love to hear your ideas!
